As temperatures drop, the furniture cover you choose can mean the difference between gear that survives winter in good shape and gear that comes out in spring faded, moldy, or cracked. Here's how to pick the right one for the season ahead.
Start with material. Vinyl covers are cheap and fully waterproof but trap condensation underneath, which can lead to mold and mildew on furniture that isn't bone dry when covered. Woven polyester covers with a waterproof coating breathe better, letting trapped moisture escape while still blocking rain and snow, which makes them the safer default for most climates.
Match the cover to your actual weather, not just "outdoor use." If you get heavy snow, look for covers rated to handle snow load without sagging or tearing, often described as having reinforced seams or a slight structure to shed weight. If wind is the bigger issue, prioritize covers with buckles, drawstrings, or built-in straps rather than ones that rely on tension alone to stay put.
Size it properly rather than estimating. A cover that's too tight will stretch, tear at the seams, and struggle to go on and off easily. One that's too loose flaps in wind, which accelerates wear and lets rain blow in at the edges. Measure the furniture's height, width, and depth and check the manufacturer's size chart rather than guessing based on furniture type alone.
Look for UV-resistant material even for winter storage. Low winter sun can still fade and weaken fabric over months of exposure, and a cover that degrades from UV damage loses its waterproofing and tear resistance well before it visibly looks worn out.
Consider vents or breathable panels, especially for cushions and cushioned furniture left in place over winter. Fully sealed covers without any airflow are the most common cause of mildew complaints, even with otherwise high-quality waterproof material.
Clean and fully dry furniture before covering it for the season, since trapping moisture or debris underneath undoes the benefit of even the best cover, and a properly chosen, properly fitted cover should let your furniture come out of winter ready to use rather than needing repair or replacement.
